Inti Punku of Ollantaytambo: The Inca Sun Gate
The Inti Punku of Ollantaytambo is one of the attractions for exploring the Inca Trail in just a few kilometers, offering stunning views of the Sacred Valley. It is one of the ancient gateways to the wonder of Machu Picchu.
Location and Significance
- It is located on a mountaintop, approximately 3,900 meters above sea level, with panoramic views of the Sacred Valley.
- It was an Inca control gate that connected Ollantaytambo with the jungle and Machu Picchu.
- «Inti Punku» means «Gate of the Sun» in Quechua.
Itinerary

7:00 a.m. – Pickup and transfer to Ollantaytambo
- Departure from Cusco by private transportation (approximately 1.5 hours).
- Arrival in Ollantaytambo and a short rest before beginning the hike.
9:00 a.m. – Start of the hike to Inti Punku
- From Ollantaytambo, the route follows an ascending Inca trail.
- The path passes through Andean landscapes, agricultural terraces, and ancient Inca roads.
- The hike ascends to 3,900 m above sea level (approximately 4 hours of hiking).
12:00 p.m. – Arrival at Inti Punku and free time
- Explore the archaeological site.
- Panoramic views of Nevado Verónica (5,682 m), the Sacred Valley, and Inca trails.
- Guide's explanation of the importance of Inti Punku in the Inca road network.
- Time for photos and a break.
1:00 p.m. – Descent to Ollantaytambo
- Return along the same trail (approximately 2 hours).
3:00 p.m. – Lunch in Ollantaytambo
- Lunch at a local restaurant (optional, not included in some agencies).
- Free time to explore the town or visit the Ollantaytambo archaeological site (optional).
4:30 p.m. – Return to Cusco
- Private transportation back to Cusco (1.5 hours).

Route
We will begin the tour with a panoramic view of the Pucllana pyramid, an ancient Ceremonial and archaeological center built in the 4th century. and considered a sacred town of the Incas. Then we will go to the historic center of Lima, where we will appreciate what was the old square Lima and more than fifty monuments and colonial buildings, among which the Paseo de la República, Plaza San Martin, Plaza Mayor, the Government Palace stand out. , the Municipal Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Cathedral Basilica, among others. Continuing the tour we will visit the museum of the central Reserve Bank where we will appreciate the collection of treasures of Peru, within which we will find ceramic, gold and textile objects from various pre-Columbian cultures.
We will also visit the Monumental complex of San Francisco, which constitutes the largest example of colonial religious art in America. Where its main attraction is the visit to its underground crypts known as the catacombs.
Return
Finally we head to the contemporary area of Lima where we appreciate the main buildings and residential areas of Lima, the Olivar de San Isidro, Miraflores, Larcomar and the Parque del Amor.
